Most small businesses do not track system utilization statistics. Only when the system slows down do they consider adding capacity. Not only can the capacity of a system cause lost productivity because of slow response time, it can actually cause a major crash because it ran out capacity on a system component. Measurements that are important to track on a server are CPU utilization, Memory utilization, Disk I/O, File Swapping, Free Disk Storage by volume, etc. Most capacity issues do not happen overnight unless some huge new application is started but build up over time. Tracking these statistics on a system can identify pending capacity issues and provide some level of advanced notice of potential problems.

Most organizations do not track their hardware and software assets and have no idea when new software or a device is added to a piece of hardware. Software tracking can provide the information for properly licensing and be a predictor of pending capacity issues.

• The System Agent collects an initial inventory of the hardware components and software programs installed on each individual computer monitored by the system. Once the initial inventory is complete, newly installed hardware or changes to the software programs are recorded on a weekly basis.

• Monthly reports that highlight all the maintenance activities, support incidents and their resolution, and server utilization statistics are provided to the customer.

• Periodic on site visits review the data with the client personal and provide recommendations to correct items that are either out of accepted operating standards or utilization trends the point to a potential future problem.

• An annual planning meeting is held with business executives to determine what additional applications are being planned or other desired business plans that may impact the overall network requirements and plan for ongoing secure solutions.
