Capacity
Tracking & Business Planning Solutions
Most small businesses do not track system utilization
statistics. Only when the system
slows down do they consider adding capacity. Not only can the capacity of a
system cause lost productivity because of slow response time, it can actually
cause a major crash because it ran out capacity on a system component. Measurements that are important to track
on a server are CPU utilization, Memory utilization, Disk I/O, File Swapping,
Free Disk Storage by volume, etc.
Most capacity issues do not happen overnight unless some huge new
application is started but build up over time. Tracking these statistics on a system
can identify pending capacity issues and provide some level of advanced notice
of potential problems.
Most organizations do not track their hardware and software
assets and have no idea when new software or a device is added to a piece of
hardware. Software tracking can
provide the information for properly licensing and be a predictor of pending capacity
issues.

about their installed assets and trends key indicators of resource utilization.
